"The craft of writing, the art of efficacy."

Hey, I'm Shala, and I am a writer + creative who loves to write authentic, encouraging content from a peculiar point of view.
My writing motto is "The craft of writing, the art of efficacy" because I believe writing is a beautiful skill that can be developed, but being able to use written word to create change is an art form. And it’s always been my goal that my writings would authentically represent those whose voices, experiences, and stories are often neglected.

My Story

My unique writing journey and career path have helped fashion me into a skillful, diverse writer. My writings have been published, featured, and quoted in a variety of newspaper, magazine, and online formats, including Forbes.com, Refinery29, xonecole.com, The Arizona Republic and AZ Foothills Magazine. I have also been a recurring on-air guest for Huff Post Live and regularly contributed to African American cultural blogs such as BrownSista.com and Thyblackman.com.

During 2012-14, I was the online editor for the career networking platform, Recruiter.com, where I wrote 800+ extensive and thought-provoking articles. My recruiter.com articles have been quoted in a range of think pieces and books.

In 2014, I was awarded the highly-competitive ProInspire Fellowship, based in Washington D.C., which prepares young business professionals for social impact. In my fellowship role, I developed and strategized two successful social media campaigns as a communications manager for a local non-profit that helped foster youth attend college. I also regularly wrote engaging content related to foster care news and legislation.

Throughout my career thus far, I have been fortunate to have a number of unique experiences, from moderating a panel discussion, alongside Facebook Co-Founder Chris Hughes, for an exclusive recruitment product launch in New York City to interviewing the Deputy Director of the United States Secret Service for my story “A legacy of Service,” which I wrote in 2011 at a small NC newspaper about the life and passing of the first black man to become a secret service agent.

However, nothing has been quite as unique and peculiar as my time serving the United States Intelligence Community at the CIA. While there, I was elected Vice President of the CIA’s Umoja Chapter of Blacks In Government. In this role, I regularly wrote content for our chapter’s newsletter and website, as well as copy for Agency events.

Since leaving the CIA, I have shifted my focus to creative writing. In 2020, I started an organization called Peculiar On Purpose, which creates relatable, encouraging content that helps women of faith feel seen, heard, and valued. I write monthly blog posts on a variety of topics ranging from entrepreneurship and faith to current events and societal issues. In December 2022, I published my first guided journal, You Are Beautifully Different: A Guided Journal To Embrace And Celebrate The Unique Way God Made You, through this organization. I am excited to continue exploring this endeavor as I work on my next journal.

One of my favorite quotes is by Toni Cade Bambara, which says “The job of the writer is to make revolution irresistible.” I truly believe that all of my unique writing experiences have given me the tools to do just that.
